What is the Babysitter Basics Course?

The American Red Cross babysitter training course is a fun, online course that teaches participants how to care for babies and children up to the age of 10.

The course includes instruction on proper feeding and basic care, how to choose age-appropriate games and toys, how to handle common discipline problems, and basic first aid. It also teaches babysitters how to find more work, build a resume, and interview with parents. These are all great life skills that will be valuable beyond babysitting!

The babysitting course is 100% online, and can be accessed from most computers or tablets. It takes about four hours to complete, but it can be paused and restarted as your schedule allows.

Who Should Take the Babysitter Basics Course?

The course is specifically designed for young adults who want to start babysitting or become a more confident and capable provider. However, anyone who is interested in growing their child care skills may find the course useful.

Once you complete the course, you’ll receive a digital certificate. You will also receive a unique ID number and QR code so potential employers can verify your training. This certificate will be valid for two years.

Does the Babysitter Course Include CPR Training?

The babysitter basics course does not include CPR or first aid training. However, you will receive skill sheets on CPR and first aid. You’ll also have an option to enroll in a CPR course upon completion of the babysitting program.

4 Reasons to Offer CPR Training to Employees

4 years ago by bwadmin Leave a Comment

Many employees have returned or will soon head back to the office. After nearly two years away, your team will probably need some refreshers. How does the coffee maker work? Where’s the conference room? And how do you perform CPR if a coworker goes into cardiac arrest?

Yes, that final question is more serious than the first two. But it’s a real possibility. Because we spend a good deal of our time in the office, there is a significant likelihood of cardiac arrest at work. This is why it’s important to ensure that your team is prepared.

Why Employees Should be Trained in CPR

CPR Increases the Likelihood of Survival

CPR keeps blood circulating until an ambulance arrives. Not only does this increase the odds of survival, but it can minimize the negative impacts of cardiac arrest.

Hands-Only CPR is Less Invasive

Many employees think that mouth-to-mouth resuscitation is part of CPR, but this isn’t the case. Hand-only CPR is the standard now, which is much less invasive.

CPR Training Improves Survival Rates on Airplanes

4 years ago by bwadmin Leave a Comment

In 2004, the Federal Aviation Administration issued a requirement that all U.S. commercial airlines be equipped with automatic external defibrillators, or AEDs. Since then, the cardiac arrest survival rate has been higher on airplanes than in the general public, according to a new study from the American Heart Association.

Specifically, the study looked at cardiac arrests that occurred on airplanes and in airports between 2004 and 2019. The records were taken from Seattle-Tacoma International Airport. Researchers looked at a total of 143 cardiac arrests, 34 of which occurred on an airplane. The other 109 took place at the airport.

Of the 34 on-airplane cardiac arrests, 15% survived to hospital discharge. In comparison, 44% of the in-airport cardiac arrests survived to discharge.

Cardiac Arrest Survival Rates Higher on Airplanes

While a 15% survival rate may not seem especially high, it is higher than the national cardiac arrest survival rate – less than 11%. Researchers say this points to the value and importance of early intervention, bystander assistance, AED availability and CPR training.

Airplane passengers or bystanders who see someone become unresponsive should immediately alert an employee or flight attendant. If you’re in an airport, perform CPR as needed until help arrives. In the air, however, always follow the direction of the flight crew.

The data is clear: bystander CPR saves lives and improves outcomes. Sign up for CPR training today and learn how you could be a hero.

HeartCert Featured on Mission Matters Podcast

4 years ago by bwadmin Leave a Comment

HeartCert Founder and CEO Tim Smith was recently interviewed on the Mission Matters podcast, discussing the origin of HeartCert and his passion for helping others – and teaching them to help others.

trained firefighter course and the HeartCert mission

The History of HeartCert

On the podcast, Tim recounts his personal journey, in which he went from a personal care attendant, to an EMT and firefighter, to a CPR instructor, and ultimately, to creating HeartCert. Tim’s career path helped him realize the lack of basic and advanced safety training that was available and accessible to the public. Because CPR is so vital to survival after cardiac arrest, the need was great – and the potential impact even bigger.

Since HeartCert was formed in 2010, the business has grown and changed to meet new challenges. During the COVID-19 pandemic, HeartCert quickly pivoted to offer online training modules and send CPR equipment by mail. This helped fill the growing need for healthcare providers and childcare workers.

Now, HeartCert operates training centers in four states, and offers virtual CPR training nationwide. HeartCert also operates its own online CPR supplies store and recently launched a virtual teaching assistant to help other instructors manage their operations.

The HeartCert Mission

Ultimately, there’s a simple mission behind HeartCert: helping people.

“I wanted to do something that I’m passionate about and that contributed to making the world a better place,” Tim said. “HeartCert offers quality, affordable and accessible life-saving training which prepares more individuals to act in case of an emergency. We’re building a base to teach people how to help others and better communities.”
